The violent clashes at the Negombo Prison which has reportedly left 26 inmates and jailors dead and more than 100 injured, is unlikely to remain merely a prison story, but a discussion as to whether Sri Lanka’s institutions under the present regime are able to manage crises when subjected to stress, with the overall result of public confidence in correctional administration being almost completely destroyed.

Analysts say the Central Bank’s regular extension of the suspension of Perpetual Treasuries, the continued administration of Nation Lanka Finance, and intensified enforcement against prohibited investment, may create the public perception that serious weaknesses are prevalent across multiple parts of the financial system simultaneously.

The glaring inability of the government to read the early warning signs of an impending prison riot and not being able to deal with it effectively, and it’s effort to manage the crisis through post-event investigations rather than pre-emptive reforms, seems to suggest the inherent weakness of the current ministers to deal with any crisis, and that is bound to seriously undermine the people’s confidence in the government’s ability to govern.
