The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, and since only events selected by the host country are included in the Games, only one male and one female Para athlete will be allowed to represent Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, Para athlete Palitha Bandara, who competes in the discus throw event, has been given the opportunity to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Who is Palitha Bandara?
Palitha Bandara, who was born in Matale on September 9, 1992, has a brother and a sister. His father is engaged in farming and his mother is a housewife.
While studying at Millawana Maha Vidyalaya in Matale, Palitha showed talent in volleyball.
He continued to play volleyball after joining the Sri Lanka Army in 2009.
He became disabled during that time.
How an ordinary athlete became a controlled para athlete
He played volleyball as an ordinary athlete and became disabled during an army volleyball match.
He did not let the injury, which occurred in 2013, hinder his sporting career. After becoming disabled, he turned to para-athletics.
