Below is the full speech Keir Starmer made announcing his resignation as British Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.
Thank you. Thank you. Walking up this street two years ago was the proudest moment of my life. A new Labor government. The first Labor government in 14 years. After years of disappointment and despair, a new page has been turned in the history of our country.
I got the opportunity to change the lives of millions of people for the better. That’s why I got into politics. The journey to get to that point wasn’t easy.
Six years ago, I inherited a politically, financially and morally bankrupt Labour Party. Many people often told me that my party was finished.
History had described us as impossible to achieve, let alone a simple majority, in the general election. But we proved those people wrong by changing the party.
It was possible to remove the poison of anti-Semitism and restore confidence in the economy, security, and national security.
Once again, a party that stood proudly for our national flag, not against it. The party worked hard to change, with a single purpose: not to gain power for the sake of power, but to change Britain for the better.
We tried to build a just country, respecting everyone and giving value to everyone. Our goal was to provide wealth and opportunity to everyone, not just a privileged few. And look at what we have accomplished in two years.
