Professor Fazima Azmi, who was appointed as the new Sri Lankan Ambassador to Iran, assumed duties at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tehran on June 30th.
Her appointment was approved by Parliament’s Committee on High Officials earlier this year.
Before serving as the Iranian ambassador, she worked as a geography professor at the University of Peradeniya for many years.
Education
She completed her schooling at Zahira College, Mawanella and entered the University of Peradeniya, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography in 1995 with a first-class pass.
She then worked as a lecturer at the University of Peradeniya from 1996 to 2001, during which time she was awarded a scholarship to a Norwegian university to pursue her postgraduate degree.
Accordingly, she was awarded a scholarship to study a Master of Philosophy in Social Change in Developing Countries (Development Studies) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 1997, and she also received a scholarship to study a PhD in Geography at the same university in 2004.
She later completed a postdoctoral degree at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology from 2016 to 2018.
Career path
The official website of the University of Peradeniya states that after starting her service as a lecturer at the University of Peradeniya in 1996, Professor Fazima was promoted to Senior Lecturer, Grade II, in 2001.
